PSLE Math

Primary school mathematics is a cornerstone of education in Singapore. It builds essential skills in numeracy, problem-solving, and logical reasoning, which are fundamental not only for higher-level mathematics but also for other subjects like science and economics. Beyond academics, primary school math develops practical skills like budgeting, data interpretation, and spatial reasoning, which are crucial in everyday life.

At Intuitive Minds, we guide students in the mastery of foundational level mathematics to equip them with the critical thinking abilities necessary to score in PSLE and excel at secondary school curricula.

Note: For P6 Students in 2025, the 2025 PSLE Math Examination follows the old (2013) syllabus.

Syllabus Organisation (with effect from 2021)

The syllabus is split into 3 content strands:

  1. Number and Algebra
  2. Measurement and Geometry
  3. Statistics

Each content strand comprises several topics that are taught across the years. The full syllabus information can be found at MOE https://www.moe.gov.sg/-/media/files/primary/2021-primary-mathematics-syllabus-p1-to-p6.pdf

1. Number and Algebra

This is a fundamental concept core to the subject, where students are introduced to mathematical operations such as addition and multiplication in lower primary, before moving on to the manipulation and order of the operations as they progress to upper primary.

Often, students get confused by topics such as fractions, decimals, and percentages. In our centre, tutors use acronyms like ‘BODMAS’, mnemonics, or visualisation strategies like ‘dot-skipping’ to allow mathematical rules to be ingrained in students for them to build a strong foundation.

2. Measurement and Geometry

This includes topics that involve measurement units and the visualisation of shapes in 2D and 3D space. By practicing questions pertaining to these topics, students learn to assess relationships between different units (e.g., 1 litre = 1000 millilitres), understand the dimensions and properties of objects and events around them, and see a practical application to their daily lives.

Here, we believe that these foundational concepts relate to and underpin the more complex topics in upper primary. With constant guidance from our tutors, they can better grasp concepts like speed (distance/time) and density (mass/volume) as they get nearer to their PSLE.

3. Statistics

Statistics teaches students how to collect, organise, and interpret data. This sharpens their problem-solving skills as they have to analyse the data to identify trends or patterns.

By honing the visualisation skills and statistical basics of our students through interactive lessons and a lot of practice, we would allow them gain confidence for the different PSLE question types, and be well-prepared for the vigorous curriculum in secondary school elementary mathematics (E-Math), a compulsory subject.
